Beskrivelse: An experimental building site near Paris was built just after the WWII. Inaugurating the policy of experimental sites led by the Ministry of Reconstruction and Town Planning, it reflects the will of the French government to modernize the building sector and to promote a new economic, family and comfortable housing. The selected site is located in Noisy-le-Sec, most damaged city of the Department of the Seine. The site consists of 55 prefabricated houses, including 26 foreign houses (Swedish, Canadian, Finnish, English). Once built, these homes are rented to families. As architectural, urban and social experience, this city of experiments is one of the most complete experimental projects carried out by the Ministry.
The experimental city of Noisy-le-Sec. In the summer of 1945, an experimental housing site was built about ten kilometers from Paris. Inaugurating the policy of experimental building sites carried out by the Ministry of Reconstruction and Urban Planning, it reflects the government's desire to modernize the construction sector and to promote a new type of housing that is economical, family-friendly and comfortable. The chosen site is located in Noisy-le-Sec, the most devastated city in the Seine Department. Located a little away from the city center, the experimental city, which was completed in 1951, consisted of 55 prefabricated houses, i.e., made of factory-made elements assembled on the site. Each of them had to be designed with new materials or processes, from different plans, and be equipped with new heating systems. This is notably the case of the CIMCAP house, the first house built in this housing estate and constructed with a vibrated reinforced concrete frame and floor joists on which the concrete slabs rest. The other originality of this construction site lies in the participation of the allied countries. Swedish, Swiss, American, British, Canadian and Finnish houses were built, representing a total of 26 foreign houses throughout the city. The Canadian house Faircarft made of wood and aluminum arrived by boat and was "unfolded" on site by only a few men, the American house UK100 (wooden frame, exterior cladding made of pressed cardboard) was delivered in five batches and then assembled on site, while the English houses Unitroy and Orlitt made of concrete slabs were built using prefabricated elements. Thus, all materials are used in all forms: pre-stressed concrete (STUP house), wood concrete, pozzolan concrete (Lemay house), wood (Armor, Southern Mill, City-Lumber houses...) but also all types of insulation (slag wool, glass wool, isorel...). Metal, although rare at the time, is also present, whether in the form of folded sheet metal (Brissonneau & Lotz), stamped aluminum sections (Dennery) or as aluminum cladding (MC7). Thermal and phonic tests are finally carried out and the whole of the houses is equipped with different equipment in order to study their reliability. This experiment is not limited to the use of new materials, it also aims to put these houses to the test of use. Once completed, these houses are rented to families affected by the disaster in Noisy-le-Sec and these families are asked to answer surveys about their homes. An architectural, urban and social experiment, the Merlan experimental housing estate in Noisy-le-Sec is one of the most original and comprehensive experimental projects carried out by the Ministry of Reconstruction and Urban Planning.
